Virginia State University Shooting: Campus Lockdown After One Man Injured Near Dormitories

Virginia State University was placed under lockdown late Monday night, November 2, 2026, following a reported shooting near student dormitories on the university’s Ettrick campus in Virginia. The incident left one male injured and prompted emergency alerts instructing students to remain inside secure locations while police responded.

According to an emergency alert sent to students, the shooting occurred near the Gateway Hall and Moore Hall area on the east side of campus. The university reported that one male had been injured and immediately implemented a campus-wide lockdown as a safety precaution.

Students were instructed to move to the nearest safe room, lock their doors, and shelter in place until university officials issued an official all-clear notice. Virginia State University Police also shared a warning on social media, telling students to avoid the area.

Shooting Reported Near Gateway and Moore Halls

The first emergency alerts began reaching students at approximately 10 p.m. Monday after initial reports of gunfire on campus.

Gateway Hall and Moore Hall are student residence buildings located near the Chesterfield and Colonial Heights line. Together, the dormitories accommodate nearly 1,100 students. Moore Hall opened in 2008, while Gateway Hall opened in 2012.

The university confirmed to The Progress-Index that a lockdown had been implemented following the shooting. However, officials did not immediately release a detailed public statement because the investigation was still in its early stages.

As of the initial report, authorities had not disclosed the extent of the injured man’s condition. It was also unclear whether the victim was a Virginia State University student or someone else on campus.

Second Shooting Incident at VSU

Monday night’s incident marks the second reported shooting at Virginia State University’s Ettrick campus since August 15, 2026.

The earlier shooting occurred near a dormitory area at the opposite end of campus while students were moving into residence halls for the fall semester. Five people, including a VSU student, were reported injured in that incident.

Authorities subsequently arrested five suspects in connection with the August shooting, according to previous reporting by The Progress-Index.

The latest incident has renewed concerns about campus safety as students and university officials await further information.

Investigation and Campus Updates

An Election Day event had also been scheduled to take place at Virginia State University on November 2. U.S. Representative Jennifer McClellan, a Democrat from Virginia seeking reelection, was expected to attend. At the time of the initial report, there was no immediate confirmation about whether the shooting would affect the event’s schedule.

Students were advised to follow official university and police communications and remain sheltered until authorities confirmed that the campus was safe.

The investigation into Monday night’s shooting remains ongoing. Further details about the injured individual, possible suspects, and the circumstances surrounding the incident had not yet been released.
